Cape Town, the oldest town in South Africa, rich in overlain history, multiethnic and very diversified in its various expressions, is worth a trip alone. But if the desire to visit to this wonderful metropolis is added to the desire to experience the wild nature of the coast by spotting a whale, perhaps walking along the sandy paths of the southern coast of South Africa, then you can’t give up a visit to the Nature Reserve De Hoopwhere you can take the world’s most famous Whale Trail Hike.
De Hoop Nature Reserve near Bredasdorp in Overberg, Western Cape, has a path for a five day hike with acommodations and portage, stretching over 54 km (34 miles) from Potberg to Koppie Alleen, offering a fabulous experience of whale-watching during the whale season (July to November). About 3 hours from Cape Town, the Reserve is located at the southernmost point of the African continent where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic ocean “meet”: it is famous for its sand dunes, beaches, whales and rich flora. De Hoope Nature Reserve is home to a wide variety of fauna: about 86 species of mammals, among which the bontebok antelope, the mountain zebra, the gray roebuck antelope, the baboon, the caracal and occasionally, the leopard. Among the marine mammals are dolphins, seals, and the spectacular whales, who mate and give birth and in the sheltered bays of De Hoop every year between May and December.
After this experience of intense and unique hiking, we propose a short period of relax on the beautiful beaches of Wilderness with a short trip to Knysna to see the botanical garden and take a sunset cruise on the lagoon of the famous nature reserve. Then a trip to the Karst Cango Caves and one night in the spa town of Montagu, located along the famous Route 62 (Garden Route) to then end up in Stellenbosch, famous for the production of South African wine. The visit to the famous Table Mountain or to Cape Point will finish off your trip.
